a fond farewell

I’m not sure how to start this post so im going to shoot from the hip and hope im true.

d-tnt is my creation, a dream and a vision, it had it’s day and that day was fun. we laughed we played and everyone gained a little somthing. I more than most. d-tnt was more than a site, it was a project to disapear into; you see im a geek and geeks love nothing more than to have an excuse to not get involved in “real life” and this was mine. I worked hard even managed to get into PC plus magazine and onto the cover disk. Kudos ;)

More than this, it satisfied my karmic belief that what goes around comes around, and you get out of life what you put in. I believe i got a ton from the project and i hope that a ton got spread out.

I learnt that there are great people out there willing to help, advise and generally chat. they ask nothing in return. although i suspect they too feel the karmic force the way i do. I have never really thought about myself as a hippy but i sure sound like one when i read this back.

moving on… back to shooting from the hip….

d-tnt is no more, sadly and i mean sadly; I am closing the d-tnt.com website. Make no mistake, not because I have to but because there is a part of me that thinks its time to pull the plug, shut the life support down, put the poor thing out of its misery. better it goes now while it has a small amount of dignity than when it can no longer control its own bladder and mumbles its own name while dribbling scrambled egg down its own chin.

and so, here we are saying a fond farewell to a site that i think was good, honest and real. it did not fall to advertising banners and third party spammers. although i might add regretfully I did consider the lure of this tantalising revenue stream.

he (d-tnt.com) will be remembered in my heart and i’m sure many others too. I hope that the friends I have made and the contacts i have gained will stay in touch and visit here once in a while in loving memory of a past friend he (d-tnt.com) served us well.

Thank you to everyone, i wont say names for fear I will inadvertently forget one and offend. you know who you are and you know i know who you are. Thanks and Thank you again.

it’s been a blast.

J :P

Sorry to see you go, Delphi was my first programming language and D-tnt was my first Delphi resource, and it is a sad day indeed, however I am grateful because I wouldn’t be where I am today without D-tnt and so I say a big thank you to Jason, Roo and all the others that helped me get where I am,

All the best in your future endeavours,

    Tim Murray

Hi Stuart, what would you do to breathe life into the old dog? I wouldnt want to say yes just to prolong the death throws, that said I would love to hear your thoughts.

Hosting and cost were not a factor in my decision.

    Kindest Regards

    Jason.

    Jason,

Nearly brought a tear to my eye here in Glasgow. Sorry to see the old boy exit stage left but as you said - time to move on. I used to still drop by every now and again - read up on the latest silly question and remember the good times!

    Anyway,

    Take care!

So the day has finally come… and gone. We were told that this day would come but even still it came as a surprise. :(

Thanks to everyone involved and i’ll be seeing you around here somewhere. :)

It was fun, I remember the days when I couldn’t wait to get to the computer to see if someone had the answer or my answer helped someone. And you were always so polite Jason, you must have bitten your tongue on many accassions.
But, you also were up and down, and even talked about moving to Australia, HaHa. Hope you have settled into a good job and I’m sure you will have a good future.
    All the best,
    Johnv

hi John, good to see you.

I’m still up and down. For as long as i can remember I have had so many things I want to do and thoughts to think. its fun but tiresome too. the important thing is I am where i want to be. for now! I am busy with work, working for myself building a small empire.

One day if australia would have me I will live there, maybe not forever but long enough to know what it’s like :)

How are you, is life good?

    Jason.

    Hi Jason and all.
Such a shame to see the end of D-TNT. I hovered silently when it began, was a very active user for a number of years, then (as with most) my personal life (away from the internet) made me a less active member.
What more can I say but that D-TNT will certainly be missed by me and my ilk.

D-TNT will live on, even if not directly… for the last few years (in my spare time) I’ve been working on something similar (an attempt to carry the torch, as it were).
It’s thanks to you, Jason, and all of those whom provided so much assistance to me during my early programming days…. thanks to all of you that I personally have been as successful as I have in my career.

    Simon

My word :( I tried posting a couple of times earlier this year, but I don’t know what happened, the posts never appeared (they were long ones at that!). I guess it’s one of those things, it was getting on for 8+years old, and these things wax and wain.. It was a great place when it was fired up! I loved trying to answer folks questions, whether I succeeded remains to be seen. Oddly, in the whole time I was there, I only ever posted 1 question, and it never got answered!

It’s good to see many of the old crowd joining in the wake, we only need Bob Baker and AdeT to complete the party!

Jason - hope all goes well, that your home life is settled, etc. Do give me a bell - I’m in Sheffield now.. Am I right in thinking you moved south, or are you still Lincoln way?

Hi Duncan, unsure why the posts would not have been added :S

Im in Lincolnshire now although most of my work comes from down south. How are you and yours? well I hope!

Good to see you and thanks for dropping by :)

  17. 17 Roo

Wow, I don’t know where or how to start…

As a ‘puter nerd, I suppose we all may have in common that we don’t have many real personal friends. Oh, I do, but not many that I talk to on a regular basis.

Somehow, through dtnt, we became a tight knit group of friends, though distance dictates that we may never meet. JohnV nailed it by his expressing how perhaps dtnt was his 1st stop after turning on the PC. Same here, and I’m sure we all still have dtnt in our favorites list. Jason, thanks for this site so we can still keep in touch and our habit can continue.

I hope that you all will continue to drop a line from time to time just to stay in touch. I will!

I’m still active in other development forums, but none of them have come close to replacing what we had (or have!). I still have most of you in my IM list and see you come on line but interupting or being interupted is not always appropriate. The forum (and now this) works best when you just need to touch base with reatity; even if cyber reality.

I’m proud to have been 1st to reply here but was in shcck and knew not what to say. You’ve all said what I was feeling. Hopefully. you all will not allow me to have the last word, even though you all know how much I like haveing the last word. :)

I’ll continue my habit of clicking http://www.d-tnt.com/forum/ as long as it point here, just to see who’s dropped by to leave a note. If you ever see my posts fail to continue, you’ll know I’ve died.

So, keep the music flowing, come see the USA, always wear a helmet, may games make you famous, keep the story going, … you know who you are!

J - We do not accept your “fond farewell”, we’re not going anywhere!!!

    I love you guys!
    Roo

My oldest daughter just made me a grandfather twice on the same day. Yep, TWINS!

  19. 19 jason.white

Roo, Congratulations on grandparenthood :D awesome news….

Thanks also for your previous post, its really cool that the community still exists without the d-tnt website. I cant believe that Im starting to think it should return… lol

    Keep on trucking.

    Jay

  20. 20 Johntor

Many Greetings and Many thanks to all that helped me from time to time!
I am very sad and I wish Jason could keep a database online for everybody to have a nice search-point.

I wish good luck to all of you!

    J!

  21. 21 mystic smeg

    Hi,

I never visited this particular web-site; I never got the chance. But to say I’m confused as to why any web-site that provides Tips & Tricks for any language, ever needs to close is an understatement?

If it was costing you money to keep it open - why not ask for donations from those that use the site?

If time was an issue - why not get more people involved? Perhaps expand to have multiple article writers from different disciplines involved (Java, C#, VB, etc.) People are always willing to volunteer to be heard. ;)

There’s always a market for well organised ‘free’ on-line language resource for developers. We’re a common bunch these days.

  22. 22 jason.white

hi mystic, to allow users to add content requires a site to be built facilitating this, the articles came from the d-tnt desktop application. they were placed in a database that was searchable online.

I have zero time to work on the project, either to produce a new version of the desktop application or produce a community site for this.

That said, if your offering your support and services i’d liek to see what you’ve got.

    Chat soon :P

  23. 23 jason.white

I just had a thought ( ouch ), i set up the d-tnt wiki ages ago for folk to still continue sharing information, code and examples. http://wiki.d-tnt.com/ no body is using it… :P

  24. 24 Howard

I actually felt a tear come down my cheek then when i read that. Thank you J….it was a blast, but i think you were probably rite to end it when you did…..many thanks too all those who helped me on my way to becoming a computer programmer…..lots of love

Howard, it was a pleasure. hey it was good fun :)

  26. 26 Peter Murray

Wow, I can’t believe its gone! I remember the olden days when I fired up my P166 and loaded the D-TNT software and had to wait for all the snippits to load up.
they were the good old days.

I wish you well for the future.

  27. 27 Joonas Pesonen

    Ooh Congratulations Roo!

  28. 28 Roo

Hi all - Just popped in to say Hi and see who’s been here since my last visit. J - Noticed your post for http://wiki.d-tnt.com/ and thought I’d check it out.

“No body is using it…” appears not to be true… Seems it’s being used as a dump site for pornographic material. You might want to a) disassociate yourself, b) clean it up, or c) kill it!

  29. 29 jason.white

Roo, thanks for the heads up. i have removed the wiki from the net :)

    Jason,

Glad to see you’re still well.

Even though I’ve moved considerably since the days of using d:tnt, I must still say I’m saddened to see it go.

When I first came accross it, I was a student hobbyist programmer in Zimbabwe, with limited bandwidth - I enjoyed d:tnt massively, as it gave me the ability to download tips, and transfer them from the internet café I was using to my home PC.

Essentially, your bit of software stimulated my programming interest, taught me loads, and essentially resulted in my current skillset.

    Thank you.

    Sean Johnstone
